About Jackie CK Cheung at McGill University (McGill)

Professor Jackie Chi Kit Cheung is an Associate Professor in the School of Computer Science at McGill University, a Canada CIFAR AI Chair, and a faculty member at Mila – Quebec AI Institute. He leads the Reasoning and Learning Lab within McGill NLP. His research focuses on natural language processing (NLP), with particular emphasis on evaluation of NLP systems, natural language generation, automatic summarization, and computational semantics. A central goal of Professor Cheung’s work is to develop NLP systems that are not only state-of-the-art according to benchmarks, but also useful, reliable, and beneficial in real-world contexts. His group studies machine learning approaches to language while drawing on insights from linguistics and psychology to better understand and analyze models, datasets, and tasks. In addition to building strong generation systems, his lab proposes new challenge datasets and evaluation metrics, addressing fundamental questions about how we should measure progress in NLP. Professor Cheung is also interested in the broader societal context of language technologies, including applications in education, health, and language revitalization. His work bridges technical innovation with critical reflection on the role of NLP systems in supporting complex human activities.
