About Su Guo at University of California San Francisco

Su Guo is a faculty member at the University of California San Francisco with research spanning genetics, neuroscience, and developmental biology. Her work focuses on understanding how molecular and cellular mechanisms regulate neural development, cell fate decisions, and behavior, frequently using zebrafish as a powerful in vivo model system. A major theme of her research is asymmetric cell division and how centrosome dynamics, polarity proteins, and signaling pathways contribute to differential daughter cell outcomes during development. Her studies integrate cell biology, neurogenetics, and systems-level approaches to link molecular mechanisms with organism-level phenotypes, including neural function and behavior. She has contributed extensively to the literature on centrosome asymmetry, polarity regulation, and neurodevelopmental processes, with publications in high-impact journals such as Nature Communications and Science Advances. Through interdisciplinary collaborations, her research also explores how disruptions in developmental and cellular processes can inform understanding of neurological disorders and disease mechanisms.

I worked in the lab for about 14 months as an early-stage PhD student; most interaction was through biweekly one-on-one meetings and occasional group lab meetings. Feedback tended to be technically detailed and focused on experimental design and interpretation. Expectations around timelines were clear in meetings but sometimes left to be inferred between sessions, which required some follow-up questions on my part. I can’t comment on funding decisions for the lab. Overall, this advising style suited students who enjoy hands-on experimental troubleshooting and technical depth.

Be prepared for intensity during final paper revisions. Normal periods are sustainable though. Talks openly about stress and actually asks how you're doing.

Quick to respond to urgent matters, more leisurely with routine emails. Has clear expectations about what constitutes 'urgent' which actually helps you prioritize.
