About Gregory Benson at University of California San Francisco
Professor Gregory Benson is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of San Francisco. His research focuses on operating systems, parallel computing, and programming languages, with particular emphasis on the design and implementation of runtime systems and tools for parallel programming. His work combines systems research with hands-on software development aimed at improving the performance, scalability, and reliability of parallel applications.
Professor Benson led the development of USFMPI, a multi-threaded implementation of MPI 1.2 for Linux that supports both Myrinet and Ethernet networks. He is also a co-creator of FlashMob Computing, an innovative project that demonstrated large-scale volunteer computing by harnessing hundreds of computers in a single day to run high-performance benchmarks. More recently, his research includes River, a Python-based framework for rapid prototyping of reliable parallel runtime systems. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California, Davis, and has held visiting research positions with the Orca research group at Vrije University and the Flux OS research group at the University of Utah.
