Sophie Engle

Professor Sophie Engle is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of San Francisco. Her research interests focus on data visualization and computer science education, with an emphasis on designing effective visual representations and developing inclusive, student-centered teaching practices. She is a co-founder of the Visualization and Graphics Lab (VGL) and serves on the steering committee of the Symposium on Visualization for Cyber Security (VizSec). Professor Engle is deeply committed to supporting diverse learners and integrating meaningful one-on-one student–faculty interaction into her courses, particularly in software development and data visualization. Her work bridges research, pedagogy, and practice, advancing both the technical foundations of visualization and innovative approaches to teaching computer science. Her contributions to education and mentorship have been widely recognized through multiple teaching and innovation awards at the University of San Francisco and beyond.
