About Hubert T. H. Chan at The University of Hong Kong

Professor Hubert T. H. Chan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at The University of Hong Kong and the Programme Director of the BEng in Computer Science. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University in 2007, where his doctoral research focused on metric dimension and the design of algorithms whose performance adapts to the intrinsic dimensionality of metric spaces. Prior to joining HKU, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics in Germany. Professor Chan’s research lies in theoretical computer science, with core interests in algorithms, combinatorial optimization, and discrete metric spaces. His work addresses both foundational and applied problems, including clustering, online optimization, graph and network algorithms, and security and privacy. He has made significant contributions to metric embeddings, doubling metrics, spanners, online and streaming algorithms, and privacy-preserving computation. His research has been published in leading venues such as FOCS, SODA, ICML, ICALP, WWW, NDSS, and the Journal of the ACM, and has been supported by multiple grants from the Hong Kong Research Grants Council.
