About Edward B. Kang at New York University (NYU)

Edward B. Kang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Media, Culture, and Communication at New York University. His research examines the social, cultural, and epistemic dimensions of artificial intelligence, with a particular focus on voice AI, machine listening, and the politics of data-driven representations of human intelligence and emotion. He is the co-Director and Principal Investigator of the multi-year National Endowment for the Humanities–funded project Machine Listening in the Age of Artificial Intelligence, and a co-organizer of the AI in Society group at NYU’s Institute for Public Knowledge. His forthcoming book, Machine Voices (MIT Press), analyzes how human voices are transformed into measurable and reproducible mechanisms within voice-based AI systems. Drawing from science and technology studies, communication, sound studies, and the history and philosophy of science, his work explores how concepts such as emotion, perception, and intelligence are stabilized within machine learning systems. His research has appeared in venues including Big Data & Society, Social Studies of Science, Science, Technology & Human Values, and the ACM Conference on Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency. He holds a Ph.D. in Communication with a graduate certificate in Science and Technology Studies from the University of Southern California.

Interaction was through a seminar series and a collaborative paper. Feedback often highlighted critical perspectives on AI and media infrastructures; supervision for research contributions was collegial. Communication was thoughtful and well-referenced. Suited to students who value theory-driven critiques of machine learning in cultural contexts.

Somewhat slow to respond to emails (1-2 weeks), but available for in-person discussions anytime. Kind of old-school about communication, but genuinely cares.

Very responsive during regular hours, slower on weekends. Appreciates when you come with well-formed questions rather than vague concerns. Fair but expects some self-sufficiency.

Meticulous about experimental design and statistical rigor. Will push back if methodology isn't solid. Not the easiest to work with, but your papers will be stronger for it.
