About William U. Shipley at Harvard University (Harvard)

William U. Shipley is a distinguished Professor of Radiation Oncology at Harvard University and a senior investigator at the Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital, where he has led numerous national clinical trials through NRG Oncology and the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG). He earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed his residency in radiation oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Shipley's research focuses on developing and refining organ-preserving treatments for genitourinary cancers, particularly bladder and prostate malignancies. His work has been instrumental in establishing trimodality therapy—combining transurethral resection, chemotherapy, and radiation—as a standard bladder-preserving alternative to radical cystectomy for muscle-invasive bladder cancer. In prostate cancer, he has led pivotal trials investigating salvage radiation therapy after prostatectomy, including the landmark NRG/RTOG 9601 study which demonstrated the survival benefit of adding antiandrogen therapy to salvage radiation. With an h-index of 93 and over 600 publications, Dr. Shipley's contributions have shaped national treatment guidelines and advanced the understanding of prognostic factors, including lymph node yield and immune cell infiltration, in genitourinary oncology. His ongoing research continues to optimize radiation fractionation schedules and systemic therapy combinations to improve cancer control while preserving patients' quality of life. Their recent contributions to the field are exemplified by influential works such as "Adjuvant and salvage irradiation following radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer", and "Residual disease after radical surgery or radiation therapy for prostate cancer. Clinical significance and therapeutic implications".
