David J. Mooney

David J. Mooney is a professor at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and a core faculty member at Harvard University. His research focuses on understanding how cells sense and respond to chemical and mechanical signals in their environment, including cell adhesion cues and mechanical forces, and how these signals regulate cell behavior such as proliferation, differentiation, and immune activation. His work seeks to define when, where, and how specific biochemical and mechanical factors must be presented to direct cellular responses, with the goal of designing biomaterials and devices that mimic these natural signaling conditions in the body. His current research spans therapeutic angiogenesis, regeneration of musculoskeletal tissues, and cancer immunotherapy. He has pioneered approaches that reprogram cells directly within the body rather than relying on ex vivo tissue engineering, including the development of a bioengineered vaccine platform that eliminated melanoma tumors in animal models. Through interdisciplinary research at the intersection of materials science, biology, and engineering, his work has had broad impact on regenerative medicine and translational bioengineering.
