About Ross S. Berkowitz at Harvard University (Harvard)

Ross S. Berkowitz, MD, is a distinguished Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology at Harvard Medical School and a senior physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital, where he has held leadership roles in gynecologic oncology for decades. He completed his medical education and residency training at Harvard-affiliated institutions, followed by specialized fellowship training in gynecologic oncology. Dr. Berkowitz's research has fundamentally advanced the understanding and management of gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD), particularly molar pregnancies and related neoplasms. His work spans the etiology, diagnosis, surgical treatment, and systemic management of these conditions, with recent investigations focusing on biomarker expression—including folate receptor alpha, nectin-4, and tissue factor—to guide targeted therapies such as antibody-drug conjugates. He has also contributed significantly to ovarian cancer diagnosis and treatment, as well as prenatal screening and diagnostics. With an h-index of 95 and over 700 publications, Dr. Berkowitz is a globally recognized authority whose research continues to shape international clinical guidelines, including the 2025 update on GTD management. His collaborative studies on decidual NK cell interactions with trophoblastic cells and the natural history of molar pregnancy reflect a translational approach bridging immunology, pathology, and clinical care. Dr. Berkowitz's enduring contributions have improved survival outcomes and quality of life for patients with rare gestational and gynecologic cancers.
