About Jimmy Ba at University of Toronto (UofT)
Professor Jimmy Ba is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Toronto, a faculty member of the Machine Learning Group, a Vector Institute faculty, and a CIFAR AI Chair. His long-term research goal is to address a fundamental computational question: how to build general problem-solving machines with human-like efficiency and adaptability.
His research focuses on the development of efficient learning algorithms for deep neural networks, spanning both theoretical foundations and practical methods. He has made influential contributions to optimization and representation learning in deep learning, and his work frequently appears at top-tier venues such as NeurIPS, ICLR, and ICML. His broader interests also include reinforcement learning, natural language processing, and artificial intelligence more generally.
Professor Ba completed his Ph.D. under the supervision of Geoffrey Hinton at the University of Toronto. He also received his master’s and undergraduate degrees from the University of Toronto, where he worked with Brendan Frey and Ruslan Salakhutdinov. He is widely recognized for shaping modern deep learning research through both foundational theory and algorithmic innovation.
