About Tarek Abdelzaher at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC)
Professor Tarek Abdelzaher is the Sohaib and Sara Abbasi Professor and a Willett Faculty Scholar in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His research broadly focuses on understanding and influencing the performance, timeliness, and reliability of complex networked systems, including cyber-physical systems (CPS), Internet of Things (IoT) platforms, sensor networks, and social sensing systems.
Professor Abdelzaher has made foundational contributions to real-time computing, distributed systems, and intelligent networked sensing, with research that integrates control theory, machine learning, and systems design. He has authored or coauthored over 400 refereed publications and has played a central leadership role in the field, including serving as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Real-Time Systems for 15 years and as an associate editor for numerous leading IEEE and ACM journals. His work has been recognized with major honors such as the IEEE Outstanding Technical Achievement and Leadership Award in Real-Time Systems, and he is a Fellow of both IEEE and ACM.
