About T.A. Springer at Harvard University (Harvard)

Timothy A. Springer is the Latham Family Professor of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology at Harvard Medical School and a principal investigator at Boston Children’s Hospital. He earned his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from Harvard University and has since established a distinguished career focused on the structural and functional mechanisms of cell adhesion molecules, particularly integrins. His research program centers on elucidating how integrins and related adhesion receptors mediate cell signaling, adhesion, and migration, with profound implications for immunology, hemostasis, and cancer biology. A hallmark of his work is the development of monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies as tools to probe protein conformation and function, leading to therapeutic innovations in platelet disorders and autoimmune diseases. Recently, his laboratory has advanced the design of integrin-modulating proteins and nanobodies, applied machine learning to antibody discovery, and explored biomaterial-enhancing strategies using protein engineering. Springer’s contributions have been recognized with numerous awards, including election to the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His prolific output—exemplified by an h-index of 166 and over 740 publications—continues to shape the fields of structural biology, antibody engineering, and translational medicine, with recent high-impact studies appearing in Nature Biotechnology, Advanced Materials, and the Journal of Biological Chemistry. Their research directions are illustrated by key works including "Effector differentiation is not prerequisite for generation of memory cytotoxic T lymphocytes".
