About John J. Mekalanos at Harvard University (Harvard)

John J. Mekalanos is the Adele H. Lehman Professor of Microbiology and Immunobiology at Harvard Medical School, Harvard University, where he has also served in leadership roles including as Chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunobiology. He earned his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Mekalanos is a preeminent figure in microbiology, with a research program centered on the molecular mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis, particularly focusing on Vibrio cholerae and Escherichia coli. His work has fundamentally advanced understanding of toxin biology, bacterial secretion systems, and the genetic regulation of virulence factors. A major theme of his research involves deciphering how bacterial pathogens interact with host environments, including studies on lethal exotoxins, coordinated attacks by secretion systems, and bacterial defense mechanisms against viral elements. Recently, his investigations have expanded to host-microbe dynamics in the gut, exploring how the microbiota combats pathogens and spares commensals, as well as natural directed evolution within microbial communities. His contributions to aquaculture disease management and microbiota studies reflect applied dimensions of his basic science inquiries. With an h-index of 126 and over 375 publications, including recent high-impact papers in journals such as Science, Cell, and Cell Reports, Mekalanos has received numerous accolades, including election to the National Academy of Sciences, recognizing his transformative impact on infectious disease research.
